Auxiliary Police Officer

The Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Auxiliary Police Officer.
The Auxiliary Unit was established as a volunteer position within the police department to “assist and support” the department in providing services to the community. The Auxiliary Officer must participate a minimum of (8) hours per month in training, riding with a police officer, or other assigned activities as instructed. The Auxiliary Unit operates in a semi-military manner and there are rules and regulations governing the conduct of all department personnel.
The Auxiliary Officer is a civilian member of the Police Department invested with that authority as prescribed by statute and as set forth by Department Policy. The emphasis is on assisting and supporting full time personnel in the delivery of police services.
The selection process will include a detailed screening of the application including a background investigation and physical examination. Applicants must have reached a minimum age of eighteen (18) years of age and be a high school graduate. Applicants must be of good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation covering school, work and employment records. Consideration will be given to all law violations, including traffic and a fingerprint records check will be required. Applicants must have normal hearing and vision functions and be free from any impediment, physical, mental or emotional, which may prevent the applicant from performing his/her duties or may endanger the lives or safety of others.
If selected to be a member of the Pittsfield Police Auxiliary Unit, the applicant will be required to attend certification though a Reserve Officer Training Course which is usually held in Wayne County. Training classes meet two nights a week and last for one college semester at Schoolcraft Community College. Classes also meet approximately every other Saturday throughout the semester. Attendance is mandatory. Uniforms, equipment and training costs are provided by the township.
