Purpose

The Auxiliary Unit consists of civilian volunteers who serve to assist and support the regular, fully sworn officers.

Selection

Prospective Auxiliary Officers are subjected to a three-person oral board that consists of the Unit Supervisor, a representative from the Field Training Officer unit and a current member of the Auxiliary Unit. Applicants who pass this often-stressful oral board are given a comprehensive background questionnaire to complete. Once this is completed, the applicant undergoes a background investigation.

Training

If selected to be a part of the unit, the applicant is enrolled in a semester-long Reserve Officer Training course, usually at Schoolcraft College. Upon successful completion of this course, the Applicant is sworn in as an Auxiliary Officer.

Responsibilities

Once sworn in, the Auxiliary may serve in several areas. The most frequent is in the patrol division where the Auxiliary serves as a second officer in a car with a fully sworn officer. Other areas of service include dispatch, records, the detective bureau and special events. These special events include non-law enforcement events such as “arresting” people for “Jail and Bail”, screening candy on Halloween, helping during Department auctions and acting as chaperones at youth dances organized by our Community Coordinator Mr. Ritchie Coleman.
