Bad Check Policy

What preventative measures can be taken to reduce the occurrence of bad checks?

1. Insist on positive identification. A valid Michigan Operator's License is preferred.

2. Check proof of identity with physical description.

3. Do not cash "Second Party Checks."

- This is a check passed onto and presented for cashing by a second person that is not the original maker.

4. The person who receives the check must be able to identify the check passer later in court proceedings. Therefore, the person accepting the check must initial it.

5. The check must have been passed in Pittsfield Township.

Notes: The person or businesses accepting the check should take these preventative measures. Failure to follow these preventative measures may result in a warrant request being denied.

Be alert to: Those instances where the person claims not to have a valid Michigan Operator's License. You should demand to see at least one piece of photographic identification, such as a Michigan Identification Card or employment identification card. Do not cash a note without at least one piece of photographic identification.
